We complain because we think our broadband is slow. We complain because
we think it is expensive. We complain about the billing. We complain
about the time it takes for changes to be made.

Just deploying a 256Kb/s broadband connection in Fiji at the moment.
Cost from Telecom Fiji, FJ$6000/month (FJ$1 is about US$1).

We don't know how lucky we are!

Isn't Telecom Fiji basically a subsidiary of Telecom NZ? (I could be way
out there, but I seem to recall they at least had very close ties).

I can understand the expense though, since any overhead lines must get wiped
out at least yearly thanks to cyclones and such.

Just my 2c.

Later'ish

While I feel for the people of Fiji, is this really a relevant
comparison to prices/speeds in New Zealand ? I'm sure that the
researchers staying in Antarctica can't get good price/speed
broadband either (or any at all :) and thats about as relevant... :)

Simon

I think we all know how *lucky* we are. And that isn't lucky enough.
My friend in OZ uses WestNet and his plan is a 1.5Mbps/256kbps/10GB
peak/10GB off-peak; all for the princely sum of AU$69.95. Yes, I know
that's a wee bit pricier than the NZ$ 69.95 I'm paying TNZ for
2Mbps/128kbps/10GB total but I think I'd wear it if I lived over
there.

Xtra/TNZ, 16:1 asymmetric, 10GB. NZ$6.99 per GB
Orcon/TNZ, 16:1 asymmetric, 11GB, NZ$5.99 per GB (without tolls)
WestNet, 6:1 asymmetric, 20GB, AU$3.49 per GB

Hmm, I don't get 2Mbps in OZ, but I get a usable download/upload ratio
for my 1.5Mbps. All those acknowledgements will zip along with a
ration of 6:1, they can barely keep up at 16:1.

Of course we have to take whatever TNZ feels like giving us. They own
the market and there is nothing we can do about it. Xtra pretty much
rules the roost. Other ISPs have to accept the crumbs of whatever TNZ
gives them.

I hope that the CC can see how this is harming the business and
residential markets but I fear that he lacks the necessary knowledge
to understand the nonsense that TNZ presents to him on a regular
basis.

I wonder how much NZ business is losing because its customers cannot
access a broadband package that makes it practical to access an NZ
business via broadband. This is costing NZ business real money. How
much lower could their costs be if their customers could deal with
them over the internet instead of having to use some kind of physical
presence?

I am not asking for something unreasonable. Just a chance for someone
else to offer something different to what TNZ gives up. Competitors
might not offer anything significantly different but without real
competition, who can tell?

Regards,

Gordon

Well, as an exact example of this, I do VoIP services, and do not even bother
with the New Zealand market because of the crap we have here, host my website
in USA, and am leaving for Italy again in 2 weeks, because my work schedule is
delayed too much here because of net issues.

I am also CEO of three companies for which the other shareholders are all
based outside of New Zealand. While NZ is great for doing business in (#1 in
the OECD recently for ease of doing business), the lack of proper internet
pretty much rules it out.

All of the companies were happy to spend the money they are making here, but
with these issues they will close the New Zealand offices.

Not that I care, I get money either way, but I kinda had a strong pride for NZ
which could have brought lots of money into the economy.

I'm beyond complaining though...I tried it here a couple of times last year
and was flamed (there's categories on this list and it just put me in the
complaining bin) so hey, what do you do.

RIP NZ economy.

Which will probably be charged out at the price the market can bear.
Which, in the case of Fiji, seems to be very high!

No matter what you do or what you have: it's always possible to find someone
who is less fortunate. And then people tap themselves on the shoulder and say
"How lucky I am".

While this is certainly true, I have doubts whether this is a successful
strategy to make it to the top.

Cheers,
Raimund
