Discussion:
Ihug UBS to JS latency problems

I've just noticed that all my 256 UBS traffic going to a Orcon Jetstream
account seems to be incurring a 100ms penalty delay. The traceroute logs make
it look like its going via Australia.

Anyone else with similar problems?

You might be a 'victim' of TelstraClear and/or Telecoms depeering. If you are, there is nothing that can be done about this except complain and hope TC and Telecom come to their senses... However I'm a bit uncertain since it looks to me like your traffic is going to TelstraClear and since it's destined for Telecom (JetStream) I would think it should go directly since TC and Telecom still have peering. Perhaps someone with a bit more understanding of peering issues can explain.

If you're not aware of the depeering issue you might want to look into the group's archive as well as news archives (e.g. Computerworld). Perhaps also NZNOG archives. A search for Telstraclear depeering/peering and Telecom depeering/peering should come up with most of it.

understanding of peering issues can explain.
I've considered it could be a peering issue, but I think more it is more
likely to be just a dodgy/fault/stuffed router/config somewhere.

I've done some other tests...

Ihug UBS (in Invercargill) --> Orcon/Telecom Jetstream 2MB (Dunedin). (bad
latency - jumps on to Telstra)

Ihug UBS (in Invercargill) --> Southnet/Global Gateway (bad latency - jumps to
Telstra)

Ihug UBS --> pop3.xtra.co.nz (works fine ala 80ms latency)
Ihug UBS --> www.ihug.co.nz or ns.orcon.net.nz (works fine ala 80ms latency)

So it seems that its only traffic thats going between Ihug and Global Gateway
that is being shunted via Telstra (and I think a Sydney router).

I'm fairly sure this wasn't a problem until up to a few days ago.

Cheers,
jon

I'm getting ~200ms from Dunedin to Internode Counter Strike Servers in
Australia. It used to be once every now and then for a spike, but as of
a few days ago, it's got very little jitter (~30ms), but is sitting at a
constant 200ms.

I'm thinking I might go with another ADSL provider. Oh no wait...it's
all the same...damn...
