Discussion:
local exchange letter to Telecom

Hi

We're putting together a petition from as many people as we can on our
rural exchange to request that Telecom enable it for ADSL. The
exchange has had fibre optic to it for a long time and it is apparently
a very simple matter to enable Jetstream if Telecom so chooses. Once I
have gathered enough names to make this worthwhile, I want to send the
letter to as many people as possible. Does anybody on this list have
any names of people in Telecom to whom such a letter should go? There
is such pent-up demand here - many people don't even have decent dial
up due to the "electric fence" issue - and many have been bugging
Telecom for a couple of years, so this is just another attempt to push
them.

Thanks.

Tricia,

There was an interesting doco/article on TV a while back talking about
the 'electric fence' issue.
Truth is that if you have problems with Electric Fence interference then
its entirely possible that Jetstream will be interfered with also.
Before you can have reliable broadband on the line, a decent quality
phone line is a must. Perhaps your petition should be to get your lines
looked at first/at the same time?

Electric Fence Noise is usually caused by poor grounding, etc, as I
remember - things touching the fence, poor insulators, etc. Theres work
there that would definately need to be done and would improve your
chances for a decent broadband signal too.

Just a thought.

Mark.

I know that I am being off-topic for this list but I am wondering if
you are attempting to climb the wrong tree here..

Your problem could be solved this way:
One long range wireless hop from your area to somewhere that has quick
enough broadband for all of you. This may still be an ADSL connection
with a large cap and a high downstream speed. And then run 802.11x all
around your neighbourhood. This will probably save your neighbours
cash overall, give you an interesting project, and saves bashing on
doors that don't want to be answered.

Better still if you have a local-ish ISP you could try talking to them
about a wireless project.

Want to know more? Maybe drop me a PM.

Cheers,
Dave

the viability of this depends on just how spread the community is. I
know on one group doing something like this but the houses are fairly
close together. If this is a farming community where distance between
houses are typically 500m or more and no line of sight you could have
problems with local distribution.

Also the one I know about is run by a tech savy IT professional, not
something most rural communities have.
