Discussion:
Not a good day to be an Orcon UBS DSL customer!

First we have an outage overnight that requires us to power-cycle our
router (they claim), second we have a "Telecom problem" (they claim)
meaning we can't authenticate, and finally once that all settles,
this afternoon we experience international traffic problems!

Details at orcon.net.nz/help/status
[although, the way they're wording things on that page is changing
every now and then!]

Not a good day to be an Orcon customer... An even worse one to work
on help-desk I would imagine!

Lucky the weekend is almost here ;-)

Thoughts?

When I woke up I did notice that the router had eeconnected, and had not obtained the autmatic DNS server address info, meaning that my lan
couldn't access anything other than by IP address.

I did find the DNS settings in the logs, from previous logins. I changed the router from obtaining them automatically to my manual configuartion
and it then worked.

I am just wondering why orcon has changed the login to NOT give out DNS
addresses when lots of people will be relying on it.

I did not have to power cycle.

Logs at this end show that Orcon are indeed assigning the DNS server
addresses during the PPP negotiation phase again. I can't confirm
that they stopped doing this as you have said (because we use a hard-
coded DNS server IP) but I believe you! ;)

I can however confirm they are assigning them as of our last login
(approx 45 mins ago).

Funnily enough, they are assigning the same IP address for both
primary & secondary DNS (210.55.12.1) whereas they used to assign
210.55.12.1 & 210.55.12.2 (still silly IMHO as they are both within
the same /24 range and therefore could possibly both go offline at
the same time).

Regards,
Pete

DNS is a part of PPP; No ISP with half a clue would break
auto-assigned-DNS. Therefore more than likely there was some 'funkiness'
in your last set of PPP credentials and ISPs usually advise a restart to
'start from scratch' - likely then that you'd get reassigned appropriate
NS and would be happy...

When you're already broken, often a reboot is a good idea. Or is it that
too many years of Microsoft OS usage has corrupted my thinking...

Mark.

Similar issues here. IIRC, I got disconnected at about 5 am. I was busy but noticed it reconnected at about 6 am but no DNS assigned. I was using IP Cop with PPtP connected to my M1122 which was in PPPoA relay mode. I disconnected and reconnected but it didn't help. It also disconnected and reconnected within a few minutes by itself once or twice at some stage. So I restarted IP Cop but this didn't help either. So I reset my M1122 and it restarted along with my last saved config which was in normal NAT mode with the modem establishing the PPPoA completely. I didn't check completely since I had to rush out to catch (this was about 7 am) the bus (which I ended up missing) but I think no DNS had been assigned, at least I couldn't seem to do DNS lookups on a local computer...

It's been rather a trying day in the Orcon offices. There have been two
problems affecting DSL today:

The first issue was caused by a linecard crash in one of the ERXes we were
moving customers onto. This had the unfortunate effect of screwing config,
which took a while to fix.

The second issue was unrelated to the first, and was caused by the rather
spectacular crash of one of our core routers. Thankfully we have plenty of
spares; otherwise we'd probably still be offline.

And neither issue had anything to do with Telecom. Wayne was in fact most
helpful in assisting troubleshooting our first problem this morning - even
after we woke him up at 5am.

/t

PS - groveling apologies to all Orcon DSL users. It's pretty unlikely that
we'll have another outage like this; we've taken some extra steps today to
make sure of it.
