Discussion:
Jetstream +, 192kps and the Split ISP/Telecom charging saga...Update.

I was on the non-UBS JetStream+ (2Mbps/192kbps) plan until last Friday.
Around a month ago, my ISP Maxnet contacted me and told me that Telecom
was ceasing to offer this "split bill" type of arrangement to ISPs at
the end of August and that I needed to move to a UBS plan. Given that
Maxnet offered a 2Mbps/128Kbps plan for slightly less $$$ than my
current JetStream+ plan, I was comfortable with this change and arranged
to move to the new plan this time last week.

Since the move, my international performance has turned to custard.
National speeds are good at around 1.9Mbps, but international speeds are
averaging only 500-700kbps at all times of the day for http traffic (and
quite often drop to 300Kbps). Under JetStream+ I consistently received
2Mbps (yes, really, day in day out consistent 2Mbps performance). Now I
see consistent performance around one quarter of what I was seeing prior
to last Friday.

Of course, I've drawn this to my ISP's attention (four times so far,
with screen snaps of performance tests, detailed explanations etc), but
to date I've seen no improvement in international performance.

Incidentally, a straw poll of half a dozen staff around my office
indicates that all UBS 2mbps customers from a variety of ISPs are seeing
similar poor international performance. The notable exceptions are the
2 Xtra users who are seeing consistent 2mbps performance. Coincidence
perhaps?...

Simon

Mark.
You are making one fatal assumption. Jetstream + (the 2mb/192kps)
service and all these issues that others are facing are because,
these
are NOT UBS services. They are essentially Telecom selling you the
bandwidth and pipe and Orcon/ISP providing support via services, The
biggest service involved here for me is Static IP.
This may clarrify things for you somewhat.
Having been an ADSL test customer back in 99 and working at
Paradise.net
in the earlier days, I realise the history, unfortunately I also
realise
that anything I may have known is irrelevant in this situation.
Pre UBS the basic logic holds - Orcon can still do the legwork if they
choose. (I know, ive done this myself in the past.) It just requires
someone to 'take ownership.'
Good luck...
Mark.
I am unsure if indeed all Jetstream (Original style) arrangements are to
abandoned at the end of this month, or if it is just the Jetstream +
service I am on. Currently I am under the impression that it is all
Jetstream style services (based on my converstaion with one of the Reps
from Telecom yesterday). This would mean that there is a much larger
number of People who have older Split ISP/Telecom arrangements (AKA the
original style of ISP's to sell Jetstream), and that come end of this
month they are either going to be Pushed to UBS via their ISP's or
Forced to go with Xtra as their ISP.

I don't know about others who may have older style Fullrate plans with
non xtra ISP's. Can anyone on this list comment if you have been advised
anything?

If this is the case, then this is potentially a much bigger issue that I
anticipated, not to be a Rumormonger ;-)

Kind regards

Joel W

Please read through the latest of my replies (to myself) on the list,
(sorry for the bad quoting style) I have been talking with someone at
Telecom of which that post is an anatomised version of. It's quite
revealing. I am definitely erring on the side of Naming both my ISP and
Telecom on the Disputes Tribunal claim form sitting on my desktop at
this time...

I still have got no response from Telecom nor my ISP regarding cutting a
deal, so i'm am guessing they need some shaking of a stick.

This is interesting.

I'm with Orcon and the UBS service over the past week has been the same
or better than JS+ was.

If they (ISP) need to provision more bandwidth, it could take a few - or
many weeks - depending on demand (are there people to do it),
availability of circuits - locally (onsite) or internationally), and -
of course - price.

Heh, and I'm on XTRA and am seeing these terrible performance issues. My
RealPlayer program keeps popping up every now and then to inform me that it
appears my connection has been changed and that now I am using a 56K modem etc...

I was under the impression that the 2Mbit plan that was advertised was
actually a 2Mbit plan, but it seems that's only for national. I probably
wouldn't mind if the product was advertised as 2Mbit national and 33.6K
international! :D

Ah well, what do you do?

You know there was that thing with detergent or something where people were
consistently getting less per bottle than was claimed? I reckon you'd be hard
pressed to find many in a group of 1000 people getting anywhere near claimed
rates from their connections.

It would be interesting to see what the average connection speed you actually
get on a 2Mbit connection is.

Anyone up for hosting a download speed test combined with php/database for
storing location details etc?

I'm assuming it would make for a nice story!

:D
