Hi All,
I thought I'd tell a tale of woe (and joy)
Like many people I got a letter from Paradise (TelestraClear) and then
from Telecom saying I'd have to upsticks and move my connection.
Alas, I'm on an old Jetstream Home 1000 Full-rate plan. I like my plan.
It works well (4Mb down, 600k up). I like Paradise, they have been an
excellent ISP (provding secondary MX, name services, etc). I don't
really want to change. My plan is old and has been grandfathered (it is
still supported, but you can't buy it new anyone). (I have my own mail
server, so changing ISPs doesn't give me email address problems per se).
Looking around Paradise (TelestraClear) and most other ISPs (including
Telecom) weren't offerening anything like the plan I'm on. Indeed, I
could see how I would end up paying twice the price and still get
nothing like the connection speed I'm currently enjoying.
To cut a long story short, Bruce Buddicon at Telecom told me it was
technically possible to keep the plan, the trick was to find an ISP who
wanted to play ball.
I talked to everyone I could think of. Paradise, TelestraClear, Ihug,
Orcon, AT&T, Iconz, and so on. No joy. In fact many people on helpdesks
were complaining that they were being forced to give up their JetStream
connections.
Back to Bruce. He suggests Earthlight in Dunedin might be a goer.
I've had a few exchanges with Sue at Earthlight and yes, it looks like
it will work. So, at the end of my current billing period I'll be moving
to Earthlight.
So for me, having spent many many hours on the phone and on the web I
have a solution. Of course, the cut-over still has to happen, but I
expect it will all be okay at the end of the day.
Alls well that ends well.
