Can someone recommend a good working ADSL modem ?

Hi list,

I have tried lately the follwoing modems:
DSE XH1169
DSE XH1173
Billion BIPAC-7100

My configuration:
ADSL modem connected to IPCop router.
All incoming traffic should be forwarded by ADSL modem to IPCop.

None of the above modems worked properly.
Both DSE modems were not working properly in half bridge mode.
This may be due to a bug in IPCop /etc/rc.d/rc.updatered script.

Both DSE modems did not work reliably after getting a new WAN IP address from
Telecom network.
Name resollution on modem was not working anymore.
Only a hardware reboot could get modem working properly again.

The Billion 7100 modem could not change web server IP adress to 81.
Old IP address of 80 was restored after a save and reboot.
After using rest button:
- ADSL link was not working
- could not connect to modem web server anymore

Can someone suggest a good working modem for both outgoing and incoming
traffic ?

Haven't actually set it up myself yet but you could try the trust old M1122 or maybe one of the Alcatel routers. I believe there are one or two other options you can try as well, this has been discussed before.

Alternatively, have you asked DSE for help? They monitor this group and do make an effort to help their users.

Can IPCop be configured to make a PPTP connection to the ADSL router ? If
so the Alcatel Speedtouch 510v4 or 530 should do the trick, in PPTP
passthrough mode. I've used the PPTP passthrough mode before to get the
real world IP directly on a Windows 2000 machine, and it worked nicely.

I'm using a D-Link DSL 300+ successfully with IP Cop.
I don't think this version is available any more, but the current D-Link
model is the 302G. I'm not sure if it's all that much different other than
adding a USB port in addition to ethernet.
I have noticed in the last month or so that I lost the ability to access the
internet after a random period of time, although the modem is showing
an IP address and an active connection. This may be more a problem
with Jetstream or my ISP. I can fix this by disconnecting and
reconnecting via the web interface for the modem, without needing to
reboot.
Another thing you may want to be aware of with IP Cop is problems
logging into Hotmail if you have the proxy server enabled, or the
Dansguardian content filter addin installed. This started a while back
when suddenly Hotmail started giving screens full of gibberish when
the proxy was active. I suspect it's Microsoft, as Yahoo mail and others
work fine.

I've got a Speedtouch 530 working well on IPCop, in DHCP spoofed mode.

You have to use the setup script from the NZ site though, not the ones on
the CD. I couldn't get it work in bridge mode where the IPCop had the DSL
credentials.

It passes the public IP back to IPCop, and works very well. Very reliable,
services work, except VPN which I'm battling with now - can't get IPCop to
net-to-net connect to a remote Netscreen 5XP.

Bridge mode ? I don't think you can use that at all in NZ. You can only
use NAT mode, DHCP spoofing mode, and Relayed PPTP.

I'd forgotten about the DHCP spoofing mode when I made my reply, but my
only concern with the DHCP spoofing mode is that it might not work very
well for those with dynamic ip's ??

When you're forced to get a new ip address by the connection being dropped
by Telecom (?) there is no way for the Speedtouch to inform the firewall
device of the change, as a DHCP server can't inform a client that it must
suddenly change address....

On the other hand Relayed PPTP means that if the DSL/PPPoATM connection
drops for an ip address change, the IPCop machine will sense that the PPTP
session has also gone down and get the new IP address as soon as it is
known.

Tonight I'm just experimenting with my Speedtouch 510v4 in "Relayed PPTP"
mode (using the template from the NZ Speedtouch site) with a Cyberguard
SG300 (with updated firmware) connecting to it using PPTP and its working
nicely.

Outside IP address is on the Cyberguard, incomming VPN support etc works,
the only slight niggle is that it can take up to a minute or so after a
reboot of the Cyberguard before the PPTP session to the Speedtouch
establishes a connection.

(I think the delay is in the Jetstream network though, as the same delay
in authentication occurs with the Speedtouch in NAT mode after pulling out
the phone line and plugging it back in, perhaps because of an improperly
closed PPPoATM session or something)

Simon

I was having problems with my D-Link DSL504 losing connectivity at
random intervals. After plugging into the console port and watching for
DEBUG errors I discovered that the loss of connectivity coincided with
errors about the Auto DNS/Proxy. I have since disabled the DNS Proxy
funtion on the router and set the ISP DNS servers manually and have had
no further problems since.

That is fairly bizzare..

Could you define "losing connectivity" i.e. was it the DSL going down, or
the Dlink stopped routing packets or was it just that users got DNS errors.

We have had a similar problem with the DLink, we resolved this by not using
the Dlink as a DNS proxy i.e. the firewall behind the Dlink forwards to
Internet based DNS servers instead of the Dlink.

Thus I don't think you need to disable the DNS proxy, just stop using it.

Cheers

The 'fix' on the Trevor's DSL-504 site
(http://shadow.sentry.org/~trev/adsl/dnsrelay.html) recommends
disabling the DNS proxy. I am sure that your approach of not using it
will have the same effect. However, disabling it ensures that the
problem cannot come back if someone naively set up their computer.

Of course, if all address assignments are provided by the DHCP server
in the router, then you can ensure that the router's own DNS proxy is
not present in the DNS servers list.

FYI, I have had exactly the same problem. The most obvious sign of
failure is that the router's heartbeat LED stops blinking and the
device 'locks up'. Trevor's description on his website is accurate as
is his fix.

D-Link describe the fault in their fix
(http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/files/routers/DSL-xxx_Disabling_Proxy_DNS.pdf)
as follows: "This is due to the DNS Proxy built into the router and
some applications which fill the memory up with DNS resolutions".
