Hi,

At the moment I have a 3 Com Robotics 56k modem going to a freesco
floppy router with 2*3 Com NIC's,one going to my Linux box and the other
to my daughters win98 unit.The system works extremely well (for a 56k
modem),but I would like to upgrade to ADSL using the above set up (- the
56k modem)+ another NIC and a

DLINK DSL-300 ADSL Ethernet modem.

DLINK Modem ---> freesco router| ---> Linux

|---> Win 98

The question is : would this modem work with the above set up.

Probably, but the question has to be asked... Why not get a cheap ADSL
router with a 4 port switch?" Same sort of price, massively simpler and
probably more reliable.

Well assuming you already have a computer there could be numerous reasons. Most cheap routers won't have a firewall but you could easily add one to a Linux/Windows box assuming the computer could handle it. You could also add things in addition to NAT like specific proxies, SIP, UPNP etc which the most routers don't have. You could also run an app or server on the computer router (perhaps not the most secure setup but probably enough for most people) if you just can't get it to work with NAT and proxies or you want it to be running more perm then your other computers. You could also easily add a dynamic IP updating utility which many routers don't have. It'll probably be easier to set up a timered disconnect/reconnect. You could also add better QOS, bandwidth management & traffic logging services. You could of course do some of this with the computer connected to the router but a lot of
it isn't supported and couldn't be easily done with many routers.

Also, you're more likely to be able to resolve NAT table size issues.

Personally though, I would get a router with half bridge or similar mode and decide what setup I would prefer (well unless I can get the modem for $10).

I built the router from a old P155 that was ready for the tip and it has
been extremely reliable.The modem in question I could buy for about $10.00
