Xtra Usage Meter

Swapped from Xtra to Orcon last week a Surf account to take advantage of the
"better pricing" (:-( if it now happens)
I have noticed that the Xtra usage meter has kept going with the same
numbers as the Telecom one even though the connection has been through
Orcon!
The xtra account has not yet finished its "month" so it is still active,
just not being used.
Can anyone confirm that the Xtra usage meter is in fact not an xtra usage
meter just the Telecom DSL traffic repackaged.
The orcon meter shows the correct usage for the ISP traffic use.
John

Are you sure your looking at the Xtra meter and not via your Telecom
account login?? When I login to my Telecom account I can see session
usage of my Jetsurf 256 account with Orcon..

I check DSL usage by going to
https://jetstream-usage.telecom.co.nz/cgi-bin/iaf/iafUserMaint which uses a
Telecom Logon of my phone number that the DSL is on.

For Xtra usage I go to
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,5729,00.html use the
Check the usage on my Xtra JetStream or Xtra Wireless plan
and logon with my xtra logon.

I have always assummed one was Telecoms showing DSL usage and the other
being Xtra traffic.

Am I wrong to assume that?

My opinion - and this is a GUESS based on my own personal experiences
with my home account - is that (in the case of a Full Rate or
Surf type DSL Plan) the Xtra Username and Password are used as an
alternate means of authentication, and the information is then provided
based on your phone line - not login ID - as this is how traffic is
metered in that situation. If you hold an Xtra Login ID then this will
work. If you don't, it obviously isnt a concern, as that authentication
relationship will never have been built in the first place.

The data being presented reflects your situation on your phone line, via
Telecom, and has nothing to do with Xtra except that Xtra have obviously
decided to use their relationship with Telecom to simplify their customers
experience. Good on em.

If you're a telecom customer you use their meter where you login with your
phone number and a password (by default, your telecom account number.)

This goes back to that much repeated adage, that in the case of Jetstream
Starter your ISP carries the bandwidth, and in the case of any other DSL
Plan, Telecom carry the bandwidth (mostly). So whether you access your
usage meter via xtra.co.nz or telecom.co.nz, as a Surf (or full rate)
customer the actual metering and charging is Telecom, not your ISP.

UBS changes the scope of this, and the details of that i'm not aware of.
I'm on JS Surf at home and use Xtra as my ISP, and have done for a couple
of years, so i'm not up on the play with regard to third party stuff
anymore.

But you needn't worry about any possible ISP vs Usage conflicts, as its
Telecoms stuff you're looking at, and when your Xtra account ends you
obviously can't use their selfservice stuff anymore.

Mark.

I may work for or have worked for or in association with, etc etc etc.]
