Hi,

For various reason I need to get a new broadband connection, so I am looking at the DSL offerings from Orcon but also very keen on Wired Country (fed up with Telecom changing the rules).

I am really keen on the static IP thing, so this is now a requirement now. I also want everything on one bill.

I have heard my current ISP, Maxnet has signed up to WiredCountry but they haven't got their act together to announce prices - I have been waiting over a month now. I would really prefer to stay with my current ISP, but the offers from Orcon and the like expire at the end of this month - or at least if you want to get them at $49. So there is a time limit.

I would really like to know if I will actually be able to get Wired Country - technically, as there are a few trees in the way. But I can't unless I sign up to an ISP, which is a pain!

I see World Net are now offering Wired Country - has anyone had experience with World net, as an ISP, are they easy to deal with, good bandwidth, that type of thing.

Thanks folks

Yeah, I've been waiting for them to sort it out as well. Getting really
tired of 128kbps.

Maybe not, from what I've read it operates on 3.5GHz, so rain fade and
the water in trees in not going to affect it. You'll have to test it
for path issues caused by the trees.

There is a discuss here that might interest:

As always, I think it'll be best to move this to the broadband list...
Actually I've had this discuss before a long while back. Personally I
think there should only be one broadband list in NZ. Seems points to
use a list that most people aren't subscribed and gets about 2-3
messages a month. ALmost like copying the real world monopoly. Since
people wont hear of new products if they are only subsribed to the adsl
list. Anyway.
I'm sending this to broadband and adsl-chat (OT for ADSL I think...)

There is little reason for a separate list these days, now that we're
far past the "teething" problems of the original jetstream. Most ISPs
are providing better support, documentation accompanying new products
and services is far superior to the documentation we received in the
early days. The amount of "technical" traffic that we see is greatly
reduced (by the looks of the size of 2000/2001 archives at any rate)

I consider the need for two lists, a broadband-tech/broadband-support
and broadband-chat list. Tech for announcements of drivers, problems
and chat for discussion of new products and services.

It appears to me that few people read the "list traffic is to be
restricted to technical matters only..." statement on the list page so
by naming it as a support or tech list that might make things a bit
better.

My 2c.

Personally, I totally agree with this.

Nevertheless, until there is widespread agreement or there is an
official change, I will continue to post all non-ADSL broadband
support/discussions to the broadband list so if you are interested
in what I've said, do check out the broadband archive (or subscribe
to the list).

Hey Tony,

I have used World-Net in the past for Jetstream Starter. Technically they were ok, not too much down-time/problems etc... but if you want tech/customer support - forget it!! I went with them because they were the cheapest and I didn't really expect much in the way of customer service, so I guess I wasn't really disappointed :)

As for finding out if you can get a Wired Country connection, do you realise that you register your interest and they will come out and test to see if you are in range? If you are unable to get service, you don't pay anything.

I am really keen to get a Wired Country connection myself, and I have done a fair bit of price research too... the best deals are with the following ISPs:

ICONZ (they call their home wireless service 'EzySurf' - www.ezysurf.co.nz)
IHUG (but I have had very poor service from IHUG in the past)
World-Net

These are not in order of best to worst deals, but out of all the Wired Country capable ISPs, these are definately the only ones that I have found that are in the ballpark in terms of reasonable pricing.

Has anyone else had any experience with a Wired Country wireless connection? What is the performance / service like?

Hope this helps,

Sam.
