Hmm....256k Surf now does 2mbps

I'm on the 256k Surf plan....and the nominal ISP is Orcon.

My speed increased dramatically over this weekend.....from 32k / sec to
234k / second.

Looks like Telecom implemented the speed upgrade as per the letter they
sent me.

This is intended as a verifiable, hard, data point FYI.

My conversion to 2mb was completed sometime between November 5th and
7th.

Telecom billing date is the 20th of the month.
Orcon billing date appears to be the last day of the month.

Hmmm.

Hmmm, curious. Telecom appear to be somewhat ahead of schedule!? Has the
sky fallen?? Unless they made a mistake by connecting you now...

Did you have to reset your ADSL modem to get the faster speeds?

Sam.

So, what's the latency like?

Also, what is your line connect speed?

I'm very interested in the speed capping behaviour as well (when it comes to
that :)

Sam.

Just sharing my 2Mbps experience...

My billing date is midnight on 4th, and my speed went up to 2Mbps during Friday 5th. However, my Jetstream was down from sometime during the day, until after midnight on Friday. I phoned Xtra Helpdesk Friday evening and after a 40 minute wait on hold, I was told that my outage was due to the speed upgrade, and would probably come right after midnight!

Needlesss to say I was not happy! I pointed out that a) I did not ask/agree to be upgraded from 256K Surf, and b) I had no notice that my upgrade would happen on Friday 5th, and c) I had no notice that it would involve a lengthy outage of my service.

As to performance, I notice very little real difference in browsing most web sites (latency? or simply typical busy web server response time limitations? - don't know yet). Only advantage so far is that downloading large files is really fast of course (a 25MB download took about 2 minutes at about 232KBps average).

Just got upgraded to the 2M Jetstream plan this morning from the 256 Surf
plan. Absolutely no problems connecting and the speed is very good.

Checking my Alcatel SpeehTouch Pro connection statistics reveals that I'm
still connecting at 4Mbps (due to distance from the Papatoetoe exchange)
same as previously, and a check of my pings shows that they are the same as
before. Both pings to my office, and pings to the various CounterStrike
servers.

Cheers, Max.

Hi Max,

How did you discover your speed change?

When is your telecom month end date?

That's quite odd that your line speed is still at maximum, I had thought
telecom were changing this with the onset of the new speeds??

Sam.

I run from the 11th to the 10th each month. On the 10th November I could to
32KiB/s down, on the morning of the eleventh I could do 256KiB/s (roughly)
down.

I had thought so too, but the throttling must be somewhere past the
connection from the modem to the DSLAM as shown by my connection report.

Alo of interest was a connect to the JetStreamGames realm proved that the
capping is definetly on the line as before I could max out the download
speed (350KiB/s plus) and now I rate limited to the same 256KiB/s as on the
new plan.

Cheers, Max.

Thanks for that info Max!

So on the 11th, you didn't have to reset your router etc for the new speed
to activate?

I usually shut everything down over night, and that morning was a power on
restart as usual. So I don't know what effect leaving the SpeedTouch on over
night would have had. Sorry.

Well my new billing period started on the 15th and lo and behold what do I
see when I crank up the speed tests...

"Your line speed is approximately 271.4 Kbps or 33.3 K bytes/sec"

Oh well :(

On the Telecom usage meter what is your current plan stated as?
Mine is still Jetstream Surf and so is the next billing period plan.

Bummer.

It changed to "Xtra JetStream Plus" in the current and next period plan on
the change over day.

Perhaps this is being rolled out in some sort of exchange ordering, as I
presume that a certain amount of configuration would have to be done at each
exchange on the equipment installed there. Or perhaps Telecom is just being
orderly about the entire process and just moving through some exchange list
upgrading all customer on it as they go.

For reference I'm on the POP (Papatoetoe) exchange, which has the dubious
distinction of being primary exchanges in Auckland (along with RUE Remurewa,
MDR Mayoral Drive, and one on the North Shore who's name I have forgotten).
So there is a lot more fibre routed through it, and it also acts as a hub
for international switching. (And before you ask, I used to work for Telecom
some years back, which is why I know about this stuff 8-).

Cheers, Max.

Bugger :(
Just called the JS helpdesk and was basically told "Oops it looks like you
didn't get switched over. Don't know what happened there. It'll change next
month then".
After the half a hour of obligatory music of course...

Sounds like you've either been throttled for excess use or downgraded to
a 256kbps plan. My surf connection still connects at full speed. I have
no idea when my billing date is and I don't really care - much less
stress not knowing by the sounds of it.

It looks like I'm _still_ on a 256k plan, the modem connection speed is
6.xxx mb/s as per normal.
No throttling as I'm 1 day into my new billing period.

Not really a problem, I'd just like to know when it's going to happen :)

Mine did this as well, it was slow (256k..) for about the first day even
though the usage meter said I was on the 2meg plan, the 2nd day into the
billing cycle it was running at full speed.

Sounds like you might be in the same boat as me, billing period ends
on the 2nd or 4th of the month. As most others I was informed in
advance that I'd be shifted up to 2mbps, and I was quite looking
forward to it, so on the day, when I was still at 256kbps, I phoned
Telecom to see what was what, they confirmed I'd be upgraded but told
me it might not happen until midnight.

Needless to say, they didn't do it, and after talking to them a couple
of times, I was told to talk to my ISP -- please! what has my ISP got
to do with THIS?

Quicksilver, being as wonderful as ever -- it sure is nice dealing
with humans again after escaping from whatever it was that ihug
morphed into -- leapt into action for me and did some Telecom
wrangling, turns out the provisioning team at Telecom had "forgotten"
to upgrade me (what do they use, post it notes?!), and refused to do
it for me after confirming they'd messed up, instead making me wait
until my NEXT billing cycle. You what?

Whatever, after a polite complaint Telecom gave me a one month credit,
so while I'm still disappointed, I'm no longer disgruntled.

I suggest you call them up, worse comes to worst you know when you're
really getting upgraded -- and who knows, maybe you can get a credit
as well? :D

Hello,

My billing date is on the 2nd of each month and when the 2nd of November
rolled around I keenly restarted my router - back to the 256kb/s surf
plan. I called Telecom, waited in a phone queue for approx. 20 minutes
then someone told me I wouldn't be updated until 2nd December. Bummer.

I just hope they do, or else it will be 2005 before we get our promised
2mbit access :(

Regards,
Chris.

Ack.

My Jetstream billing cycle begins on the 18th (today) so in theory I should
have changed over to Jetstream Plus 2Mbit today, but surprise surprise,
nothing has happened, it's still running at 256Kbit.

Checking the Jetstream usage page says "Jetstream Surf flat rate usage" for
both current and next plan.

Does this mean that I've been "forgotten" too and wont get 2Mbit until
December 18th even if I ring them and complain ? GRRRRRR...

Simon

not sure, but when i checked just before midnight on the 16th of
November, my next period usage plan said "JetStream Plus usage". When
midnight came around, the usage meter said I was on "JetStream Plus
usage", however I was still only doing 256kbits (~32kBytes/sec).

I checked again at about 9am and i was downloading at 2Mbit (~256kBytes/sec).

If today is your billing anniversary, then your connection should upgrade
overnight. I think it happens around 2am.

Depends what you mean by "anniversary". My Billing cycle begins on the 18th
and ends on the 17th. The usage counter has already reset to zero, but it
still says Jetstream Surf flat rate and is still throttled...

Just checked the Usage Meter and it now says my "Next period usage plan:
JetStream Plus usage".

It didn't say this yesterday.

So hopefully this means it will change on the 15th of December then.

Hopefully this will also mean the connection will be faster on average than
Surf and I won't be pulling what remains of my hair out cursing the latency
and wishing I was back on Surf.

For the record, my line changed over to Jetstream Plus this morning, one
day later than expected.

When I checked the Jetstream usage page this morning it now says Jetstream
plus for current and next plan. My router had been online overnight (it
normally never drops the connection) so I checked the download speed - I
was still getting 256Kbit, so I switched the router off and let it
reconnect, and now I am definately getting something approaching 2Mbit.

So it looks like you definately have to allow the DSL connection to drop
and reconnect to get the new speed. (No mention of this in any of Telecom's
information - I guess they just assume that everyone has unreliable
connections that drop at least a couple of times a week ? ;-)

Also noticed that the DSL line speed change from 7616/896 to 7616/320. A
little bit puzzling that the upstream speed would drop but not the
downstream, as I was half expecting the downstream speed to drop to a bit
over 2Mbit as per Telecom's new policy of bringing the DSL line rates into
line with the plan that you're on...

Simon

your adsl modem will not show 2mbit unless you actually have that bad
a connection with the exchange. what you see on the modem's
information page will always reflect what speed you are can achieve,
but your speed is throttled to 2mbit by telecom.

even in jetstream starter 128k days, my modem reported around 7600kb
connection. the fact that your upload speed is reduced merely
indicates that your upstream connection this time around is slightly
slower than it can be.

of course this is all IMHO =P

Unfortunately you're a bit behind the times... it has been reasonably
widely published that Telecom was going to start capping the DSL line
speeds based on what plan you're on, (there is a press release on the
Telecom website even) instead of letting it connect at the full potential
DSL line speed for your line. Check the archives for this mailing list and
you'll find plenty of references to it, and comments from people on UBS who
have already had their DSL line rate capped to 320Kbit.

ah ok... in that case, telecom hasn't followed through with what they
have said (yet). Im still connected at 7616kb. and perhaps that
explains why i can seem to upload faster than 192kb. my bad.

Sure your router isn't telling you fibs ? I was under the impression that
with _A_DSL that an upstream speed higher than 1Mbit was flat out
impossible. Or does the ADSL spec not dictate which direction has the lower
speed ?

EG if they cap your downstream rate to 320Kbit, but don't cap the upstream
speed, does the router decide that the excess bandwidth can be utilized for
the upstream direction instead ? Interesting if its true... but I doubt it.
Anyone studied the technical specs of ADSL that can give a definitive answer ?

Simon

So what plan are you on ? the 2Mbit Jetstream plus ? If so it looks like
they throttled your downstream speed (second time lucky anyway) but not my
downstream speed... hmm. I'll do a bit of testing tonight to see what
usable speed I actually get...(the quick test I did this morning indicated
a usable downstream speed of less than 2Mbit)

I switched off our modem and turned it back on today and we have been

That was before they changed the way the adsl rate limiting works. Now
you will connect at the speed you buy and not higher

And connecting to JS Games won't mean faster :(
Will it still mean free MB's though?
