Discussion:
Problems with DynDNS.org on Jetstream Plus?

Hi all.

I'm currently looking into getting DSL at home (I currently have
cable). The reasons behind this are many and varied, and best left
for another time.

The killer app for me is, because of some of the things I do at work,
having access to my machine at home from around and about. With
Paradise/TelstraClear, this has previously been quite an easy problem
to solve as I have a static IP. On the surface of it, it's easy
enough to solve with DSL as well - grab a DynDNS.org hostname,
configure up your ADSL router to update this, and you're away.

Where the problem comes in is that a friend of mine has recently
switched to Xtra (from Paradise). Using Paradise, the updates from
his DSL modem worked fine (he's got a USR 9106,
http://www.ascent.co.nz/mn-product-spec.asp?pid=119687). When logging
into the DSL network using his Xtra details, updates from this modem
fail. So - Paradise works, Xtra doesn't.

There's some ancient evidence
(http://www.unixathome.org/adsl/archives/2000_11/0479.html) that
indicates that Xtra's transparent proxy may be giving some pain in
this area, but he's been unable to get a sensible response from the
Xtra helpdesk on this matter.

What I'd like to do is avoid all pain before I start :) I've had a
browse through the list archives from August through to today, and
nothing sprang out as obviously hurting people. This leads me to
believe that possibly:
1) My friend is a moron, and shouldn't be trusted to set up his own
stuff. Whilst possible, the fact that he got it working with
Paradise/DSL implies that it's unlikely.
2) This is a relatively new problem with Xtra, and may get resolved if
any Xtra people on this list see this thread.
3) Xtra have a policy of not allowing this with the new JetStream
Plus, and I'd best use another ISP like Orcon.
4) It's broken with all ISPs on JetStream, and I'll need to use some
sort of software DynDNS solution with proxy bypass. Not likely as
Paradise/DSL worked, it's just Xtra/DSL that doesn't.

Can anyone provide some information on whether or not this is a known
problem, workarounds, and the like? I really do need consistent
remote access to my box, indeed it'd be nice to have a (low volume)
mail and web server there as well for testing.

Cheers

Richard

I have Jetstream Plus and use the software and service from
www.no-ip.com without issue. I run the software on the PC (as a system
service) rather that set up my router (DSL504) to do it.

Cool stuff. Without downloading their software it's hard to tell if
this uses http or some other protocol (that may bypass proxies). It's
definitely worth a shot though, we'll configure it up for him.

My server at home is actually OS X, which means I need software for
that. It looks like No-IP has some Mac software, but there's also
other software for use with DynDNS (http://www.dnsupdate.org/) that
seems to be Mac-centric.

More on this after some testing.

Richard,

I am on xtra Jetstream.

I've been running a server here for 6 months and use a dyndns.org
hostname. I have had no issues whatsoever.

I've used a Netcomm 1300 modem/router which allows updates from within
the router itself, plus I have used an Alcatel Speedtouch Pro with
'DirectUpdate' (www.directupdate.net) installed on the server to update
dyndns and dnsmadeasy. Sounds like a strange problem your friend is
having...

Regards,

Glen

Hi Richard,

I had paradise/ADSL (before I shifted house/spent 18months contracting in Oz
etc) and the only way I could reliably get dyndns stuff working was to
install a 3rd party software tool. I cannot remember the name offhand,
something like DirectUpdate, but it was listed on the dyndns client software
links page.

It actually connected to the routers web console and retrieved the IP
address from a page off there (you could specify a particular URL and it
would scan it looking for IP addresses). It would then connect to the
dyndns system and update your IP. Seemed to work fairly well.

Cheers,
Jared

Cool - both yourself and Glen have mentioned this tool as useful, and
may work for him - his host is a Windows box, and this will probably
be the ticket.

The trick with this would be whether his modem can display its
external IP in a web page (http://www.directupdate.net/faq.html#q13) -
some playing is probably required. I'll check this out later on.

Some ISPs force you through a proxy server. Whilst this can be made to
be completely transparent othertimes you will fine that if you access
something on port 80 you will appear to come from the Proxy server
rather than your IP address.

The work around is real simple, just use a Dyn DNS service/client that
works on a port other than port 80. That way it's pretty much
guaranteed to give your true IP address.

Thanks to you guys on the list for the helpful responses on this.

It sounds like there's no known problems with the solution, and it's a
matter of finding the right router/software combo (or just getting the
setup correct).

This makes me sleep a little easier. If DynDNS doesn't work, there's
No-IP to try. Life should be all good with this, and I'll have a
little play.

Cheers, and thanks again for the great responses.

In my experience xtra are the only ISP who do not like giving static
IP's to home users.
Its not a problem with any other ISP in fact with most other ISP's
provide it as a part of the DSL plan.
I'm with orcon and it's free.
