Slow Downstream Connection Speed

Hi all

My Downstream Connection Speed has dropped from 7000+kbps down to 320kbps (less than a dialup). Uplink is 160kbps.

I'm on the Jetstream Plus package so should be getting 2MB down approx.

I've used about 1/2 of my 10GB limit for the month.

I'm still on hold to Jetstream Tech Support (now just over an hour and a half).

Do my Attenuation and Noise levels look okay? I'm not sure what "normal" is.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 320 kbps 160 kbps
Line Attenuation 18 db 4 db
Noise Margin 30 db 31 db

Regards
Mike.

Nope,
That's what is should be for the 256k plan.

256kbps ~ 32kBs (divide by 8 for bits to byte)

The 320 is 256 + a value for ATM Overhead.

As for why it isn't 2MB, you should check your usage meter and see what plan
you're on, and then change it if you're not on a 2MB plan.

First stop would be rebooting your router and seeing if it comes up at the
right speed.

Cheers,
-Jeff

I have /exactly/ the same problem. Was supposed to go over to swift 2mb plan
on the 24th.

Line rate my modem connects at is 320/160. Attainable Line Rate is 7744
Kbps/1112 Kbps.

I spent 55 minutes on hold to Telecom on hold on Friday. Was told I needed
to contact 0800 738 738, op 2, op 1. Spent another 40-45 minutes on hold
waiting for them. When I spoke to someone I was told that it would be fixed
on Saturday and I would be contacted, could I please be available and near
the phone. Stayed home all day.

Satuday night I rang back, spent 45 minutes on hold on Saturday night, I was
told that the previous person was wrong, someone needs to come to my house.
I would be contacted before 1630. Stayed home all day Sunday.

I rang back again on Sunday night, 30 minutes on hold, spoke to someone who
said they had no record of anything being organised. Got put on hold again
for another 10 minutes while they spoke to their next level of support. The
person returned to say they would ring me back.

45 minutes later they rang back and said the fault was at the exchange, and
that a technican would be sent out to the exchange today.

So 4 phone calls, over 3 hours on the phone and two wasted days, I have
three different stories and still no idea on what is actually the problem.

Which exchange are you on? I am in North New Brighton in CHCH.

It seems strange to me that a fault would result in such nicely rounded line
rates?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Stuart Whelan.

After being on hold for 2 hours and 20 minutes I got through and they said
they would do some line tests from their end and call me back.

After 20 minutes they called and said they had done a reset at the exchange
and it should be fine.

I checked and my up/down rates had gone back to normal.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6464 kbps 832 kbps
Line Attenuation 18 db 4 db
Noise Margin 12 db 12 db

It does seem strange that my line was throttled back to exactly 320 down and
160 up.

Much better now. Downloading torrents at 10k down and 5k up was a pain.
Now it's back to 250k down and 5k up which is a much better ratio :)

Cheers
Mike.

the 320/160 is the standard dslam limit for the 256k plans.

256 + ATM overhead
128 + ATM overhead

from the looks of things someone messed up and limited your line to 256k speeds.
