The new UBS specification that is being held up as the "answer" to
Local Loop Unbundling, especially by some ISPs like orcon.net.nz who
are calling it broadband.
It is 7x faster than dialup

hey... if I can get 256k unlimited 24/7 and a fixed IP for $49.95 p/m
residential who am I to argue?
OK it's still far too complicated to understand the subtleties of the
various offerings etc. but for now it seems like the best option.

As for the proposed "Churn" charge which Telecom wants to charge people
to stop them changing providers on a whim, I say get F*** If I see a
cheaper-Better plan I'll do not want to be penalised for changing from
an existing one.
As it is I am giving up Telstra Cable which runs outside my door as
Telstra do not offer flat rate nor 256k nor fixed IP so I'm off back to
a Telecom line thanks very much!

Well I am on Telstra Cable, it is true that it's not flat rate, but I
am getting 256kbps, and have a fixed ip address. I also have other
options up to 2mbps (possibly more), for what would be if I could
aford it an attractive rate both in terms of monthly cost and data
charges.

You prolly don't listen to internet radio stations or download much. I get the feeling I would go
over 10 Gb easily. Who out there is on a 10 Gb plan a wishes they had more?
I guess several will be tempted to reply, "I have 10 Gb and it's plenty" but I want to know if there
are are any users frustrated with a 10 gb limit.
Oh... a correction TelstraClear do supply a Static IP with their cable service, it's part of the whole
deal with a cable modem etc.

I was unhappy about it when going over it would mean paying by the
megabyte for the excess, but now that it just means slowing down for
the rest of the billing cycle, I don't mind so much. I've never really
come close to exceeding 10GB under either arrangement, and that's with
a couple of flatmates to help me. The difference is now I don't need to
be so paranoid.

I have a "pretty quick" internet connection at home with no monthly traffic
cap (perk of the job).

I typically move between 500megs and 2 gigs of International traffic per
month. My domestic useage normally sits in a similar range.

I don't watch what I download at all, and generally download whatever I feel
I need to download.

So yes, I think I'm in the group that wouldn't be frustrated with a 10 gig
cap, especially if there is no financial penalty for going over this cap.

yes - I have access to some very nice video streams at 2mbps (DVD quality).
They use 720 MBytes per hour. I can watch them on my Jetstream link but
only for a few minute$.

When I encode video I run at 13GBytes per hour. Then process it and want to
shift it to my servers in town. On a non-day I carry a 20GB disk in my van.
On an average day its 60GB, on busy days its a 300GB disk. Earlier in the
year we did the processing for 26 x 1/2 hr TV shows. The disks were busy. A
2 day conference recorded is 250 to 300GB.

We recently downloaded 6GB of video from Aust for processing.......nothing
unusual......

Lack of broadband certainly *does* hold business back. I'd really prefer to
have the processing machines just writing to the disks in town.

Well I sent nearly 20 Gigs over the internet last night in
an internet backup of a server. This sort of service might
be feasible and cost effective for several business's and
individuals if they did not have to pay so much to transfer
the data. Imagine paying for that data at 0.20c per mb.
Then imagine doing that at 128kbps or 256kbps. Ouch.

This reminds me of those ads I hear on the radio about Internet backup solutions. What they never seem to mention
is how much more most people will have to pay in data charges...

Hi
Our web address won't resolve to our static IP and we cannot traceroute in
or out correctly.
5 long phone calls later.....(Sound familiar anyone?) and "we will escalate
this to our complex problems..."
Is anyone else having problems with Internet accessing their Paradise static
IP's?
Kind regards

Dude, that sounds more like a DNS problem on your part? Have you checked
your DNS record is actually pointing to the correct IP?

Kind Regards

That kind of looping with TelstraClear normally means your Cable connection
is disconnected AFAIK.
