Hi Folks,

I have a family member (with her young children) returning to NZ and
they are wishing to get an ADSL service for their new House. I have
had ADSL myself for 6+ years, however as I have been employed in the
NZ Networking industry for 30+ years, my implementation is very
specific to my needs, and now I have been asked to provide a
recommendation for quite a different set of requirements -

1. Anything that needs Windows or USB is OUT, this is a MAC OS X
only family.
2. A recommendation for an ISP that is happy to support MAC (or
non-Windows) users, who are at a fairly low level of computing
knowledge. No-one in the house is computer literate past the most
basic knowledge. Simplicity is key here.
3. A recommendation for an ADSL Router with Ethernet connectivity
and with good Web management (and doesn't REQUIRE Windows).
4. I have confirmed that they can simply plug their MAC into my
Etherswitch and they have Internet access via my ADSL connection, so
Networking should be fine as long as the Router has an active DHCP server.
5. This will be a (wired) Ethernet only environment, there is and
should be no Wireless capability in any device.
6. Some form of Web Site filtering within the Router would be
desirable, but not essential.

So far a Dynalink RTS 1335 looks like a starter (4 Ethernet ports
should be plenty), but I would prefer comments from people who have
actually USED this or similar devices. Yes, price is important (but
does not have the final say).

Cheers..............pk.

Oops sorry, just read the bit about 'no wireless'; however you can disable
it and there are endless security options so not a problem. There is also a
model without wireless, but considering the advantages of not having to
re-do cabling every time you have a house rearrangement of any description,
I'd take the wireless option as a contingency every time. There are multiple
levels of wireless security built in.

I put one of these in for a customer who is so far away from the Telecom
exchange, that most routers won't connect. The customer is not technically
capable (and has both Windows and Macs connected), but I haven't heard from
them in 9 months and I know they would contact me if there was a problem. I
can't remember the last time I had to restart one of these because it was
misbehaving. Contact me by email if you want any other info.

Cons: a bit more expensive than the Dynalink.

I use 3Com Officeconnect routers most of the time. They have a good
feature set, built-in wireless, DHCP, VPN passthrough etc etc, are happy
with Macs and are very stable. 4 ethernet ports and reasonable firewall.
They work well on marginal lines too which is a big plus. You can manage
remotely via your browser no problems (not that you'll have to!) Around
$120 + GST.
Cheers,
Steve
