I see that the 256K Jetsurf plans are now being throttled

I went to download my news group headers this morning and I find that mu
downloads are now at about 7.8KB rather than the 32KB it was yesterday.

DU meter shows that I have done 13 Gig of IP on this PC for the month and
Orcon shows that my router started a new session yesterday. I guess a
router restart triggers the throttling so I guess I will have to
restart after the 29 to go back to normal with Orcon's UBS system

I can't get a reading on the Telecom usage meter as it gives me this error
message when i try to access it..

An IAF template error occurred:

Interesting...

My ADSL month rolls over on the 24th and on Friday (22nd) I had used 78meg
over my 10gig limit but was still running at 256k. We were planning on
being away for the weekend so I decided to do some testing. I reset my
router and re-tested the speed - still full speed.

I set some downloads going overnight (P2P) and these used another 1 gig of
bandwidth. Resetting the router on Saturday morning still didn't kick my
speed down.

I wonder if there is an amount of grace before speed change is implemented?
Remember the original blurb said '*may* be speed capped [after reaching the
10gig limit]'. If this is true, then this obviously must lie between 11 and
13 gig.

Didn't try the TC jetstream meter after reaching my limit, but I have far
surpassed the 10gig limit previously with no issues.

Sam.

I started getting about 6.5-7KB after when my meter reported 13GB (last time I checked it was 8 gb, don't check it frequently). I do not keep my own records. However I was getting 32KB fine then suddenly changed to 6.5-7KB and when I checked my logs, it appeared there had been no reconnection (it's an M1122 and I'm no expert on the logs but best as I could make out there had been none).

As mentioned before, it's very likely their system (remembering 2 mbit is here) would not allow a user to get around the cap by never restarting their modem so either they would have to force a disconnection or do it without requiring reconnecting. Since they're changing how everything is working and have spent so long getting the cap working, it would seem logical if they did the later.

We aren't the first reporting being capped but the previous report was a 100gb user if I recall correctly.

Since their usage meter seems to be slow at updating, maybe this is why you get extra, if this is how they implemented the cap (which would not surprise me). Heck maybe there is even some delay between the traffic meter 'realising' you've gone over 10gb and the cap being implemented.

Also some of the info on the cap doesn't sound lenient

For example
http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/ws_2004_09_24.pdf

and the Xtra page says:

"All of the Flat Rate plans have a monthly high-speed allowance and your connection will be reduced to dial-up speed if you exceed this."

Altho below this it says "may be reduced"

I think it's fair to say that you will be capped quite fast with their new set up. Whether they have a precise limit which is above 10gb or their capping thing is just as slow or slower as their usage meter, we might not know.

P.S. Last billing period (ended October 13th) I exceed my cap by a fair amount but was not limited. And if you're wondering how I managed to use 13gb in less then a fortnight, well it is (hopefully) my last period with Telecom, so I decided to go all out. Not to mention they're going to charge me the full monthly fee anyway whenever I get moved although it looks like I'm going to get most or all of my billing period.

A few weeks ago I went over 10Gb and didn't get capped immediately, if
anything my line got uncapped, I hit 60Gb a few days later and then my
line disconnected and came back up as 64kbit.

The only annoying thing is that the speed limiting didn't come off
straight away when I shifted over to UBS yesterday, but it is now off
and I'm very happy on UBS :).
